DePuy ASR Failure Symptoms

In the past few years, hundreds of patients have reported DePuy ASR failure symptoms to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after receiving a DePuy hip implant during hip replacement surgery.

While many patients may not know which device they received during their hip replacement surgery, those affected by the recalled DePuy ASR devices have reported serious side effects and have been forced to undergo a painful and costly revision surgery to correct the defective devices.

Unfortunately, each additional revision surgery may have an even shorter life span than the initial hip replacement surgery.

What are DePuy ASR Failure Symptoms?

Side effects and DePuy ASR failure symptoms may appear months or even years after initial hip replacement surgery. Symptoms experienced may include:

  • Hip dislocation
  • Difficulty walking
  • Persistent hip pain
  • Prolonged hip swelling or fluid accumulation
  • Grinding or popping noises in the hip
  • Loose hip cup

How Serious are the DePuy ASR Failure Symptoms?

The defective DePuy ASR hip devices have been linked to a serious condition known as metallosis. In some patients, the metal-on-metal movement of the hip implant causes excess friction that releases potentially-dangerous levels of metal ions into the tissues and bloodstream. Metals such as cobalt and chromium have been measured in amounts almost 100 times the normal limit in DePuy hip implant recipients.

Excess metallic debris in the bloodstream and tissues can cause the following serious DePuy ASR failure symptoms:

  • Necrosis (tissue death) and loss of blood flow to the area
  • Inflammation
  • Pseudotumors
  • Hip pain
  • Infection
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Loss of motor skills
  • Cognitive impairment

Those at highest risk for experiencing metallosis and other serious symptoms include individuals of short stature, women, people with weakened immune systems and obese individuals.
